Job Title: Dyslexia Barton Tutor

Uncommon Good is a nonprofit organization that operates education, urban farming, and health programs for low-income families. Its education program, Connect to College, is a college access program that provides low-income students in 4th – 12th grades with mentors, tutors, academic guidance, and enrichment opportunities. Uncommon Good’s urban farm program, CAUSA, provides healthy food and wellness programming for low-income families. Our MED program supports medical professionals who serve in under-resourced communities.  

Position Summary: This is a part-time, in-person position in Uncommon Good’s dyslexia program within the larger Connect to College program. The dyslexia program provides screenings for dyslexia, structured literacy (Barton) tutoring, dyslexia education workshops for parents and students, student enrichment workshops, and capacity-building support to school districts.  

The Uncommon Good Dyslexia Barton Tutor will be responsible for the following: 

  • One-to-one structured literacy tutoring with students who have dyslexia, using the Barton Reading and Spelling System. 
  • Completing professional development in dyslexia and the Barton system, as needed. 
  • Attending weekly dyslexia team meeting. 
  • Tracking student progress in the dyslexia program. 
  • Assisting in summer programming, as needed. 
  • Assisting in Dyslexia Student Workshops, as needed. 
  • Assisting in Dyslexia Parent Workshops, as needed. 
  • Providing additional administrative support to dyslexia team, as needed. 

Qualities, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience  

  • 2 years of experience tutoring children. 
  • Ability to hear, pronounce, distinguish, and manipulate sounds. 
  • Passionate about building positive change in the field of literacy, particularly dyslexia. 
  • Experience with and empathy for students with learning differences. 
  • Dedication to learning new information and skills in the fields of literacy and dyslexia. 
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and/or Google Suite; proficiency with Zoom. 
  • Spanish language proficiency highly desired but not required. 
  • Experience with the Barton Reading and Spelling System highly desired but not required. 

Because this job requires significant training (provided during regular work hours by employer), we are seeking a person who would like to become a long-term member of our 7-person team.  

Tutoring hours will fall between 3:30 pm and 7:00 pm (Monday – Friday), with meetings, lesson preparation, and record-keeping happening before or after those hours. Training will occur between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm, as needed. The dyslexia team meets from 1:00  – 2:00 pm every Friday. In addition, the Dyslexia Barton Tutor may be asked to assist with three Saturday workshops and three Thursday evening workshops (annually). 

  • Must pass a background check. 
  • Tutoring location will be at The Village at Indian Hill (1460 E. Holt, Pomona, CA 91767). 

Wages and Benefits: The dyslexia tutor will earn $25 – $27/hour, depending on experience. Uncommon Good employees have access to free organic fruits and vegetables (from Uncommon Good farms). A 403(b) Individual Custodial Retirement Account is available; Uncommon Good covers fees. Uncommon Good provides an annual paid personal day allotment.
