Literacy and Dyslexia at Uncommon Good

Literacy is a fundamental human right and the foundation for lifelong learning. It is fully essential to social and human development in its ability to transform lives."

And Yet...

Only 35% of 4th grade students in the United States score as proficient or higher in reading and only 30% of 8th grade students score as proficient or higher in writing."

At Uncommon Good we believe ALL children—of every race, ethnicity, and income level—have the right to read and write with confidence and skill.

Here’s what we are doing at Uncommon Good…

The Reading Academy

Through the Reading Academy, Uncommon Good is using innovative reading activities to help children develop a love of reading and confidence as critical thinkers. Our work embraces the science of reading and the works of diverse authors.

The Writers’ Studio

Through our Writer’s Studio, Uncommon Good students are finding their authorial voices in a wide variety of genres. The heart of this program is expert one-to-one guidance and small-group sharing.

Dyslexia Support

Uncommon Good appreciates the unique strengths of students with dyslexia and their right to an equitable education. To that end, we offer screenings, structured literacy tutoring, vocabulary and world knowledge workshops, audiobook clubs, homework help, social/emotional support, one-to-one advocacy, and self-advocacy training.

In the Community

Uncommon Good is collaborating with local schools to improve literacy instruction and support for all students. Our services include research, consulting, and professional development.
"Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty and a building block of development, an essential complement to investments in roads, dams, clinics and factories. Literacy is a platform for democratization, and a vehicle for the promotion of cultural and national identity. Especially for girls and women, it is an agent of family health and nutrition. For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right."
Kofi Anan
Former UN Secretary General
