Bread and Roses

At the Women’s March LA with our Bread and Roses sign. Bread and Roses was the rallying cry of the women garment factory workers a century ago when they marched in the streets to demand safer working conditions for women and children in the brutal factories of the day. Unsafe conditions led to horrific incidents such as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in which 146 workers, mostly young women and even children burned to death or leaped 10 stories to their deaths to avoid the flames. This was one of the first labor movements in the US and it was led by women. Soon after the suffragettes also adopted the slogan. The bread stands for survival and the roses for quality of life. The stirringly inspirational song “Bread and Roses” has been recorded by a number of artists in our time. We brought the sign today to honor our brave foremothers and because the demand for a humane life for all, especially women, is still very relevant. #uncommongood #uncommon_good #womensmarch #womensmarchla #womensmarchlosangeles #breadandroses #unions #claremont #pomona #womensrights #humanrights #labor #workersrights
